Audio tour of exterior
To help celebrate the centenary of the opening of the Middlesex Guildhall in 1913, the Supreme Court has commissioned an audio tour of the outside of the building highlighting its rich architectural features.
This walking tour guides you around the building, pointing out the rich symbolism of the allegorical figures and historic tableaux designed by James Gibson and Henry Fehr. Designed to be enjoyed whether the building is open or not (so ideal for those visiting Westminster at the weekend), the tour explores how the commission by Middlesex County Council was creatively interpreted by the architects to leave a legacy dedicated to the importance of good governance and upholding the rule of law.
The guide tour lasts around 15 minutes and can be freely downloaded in a number of ways:
- If you have an iPhone or iPad, search for "Supreme Court tour" on the App Store
- If you have an Android device, look for "Supreme Court tour" on the Play Store/Market
- You can also download the audio as an MP3 file from this page - simply right click and 'Save As' to your computer, then transfer to your playback device in the usual way
If you download the full app, you will also find a diagram indicating the position of various figures carved to represent a range of traditional industries and occupations, alongside noble values such as Truth and Justice. The app also includes photographs and more detailed information on some elements of the architectural style of the building and its surroundings.
The walking tour begins outside the front doors of the Supreme Court, on Parliament Square.
Please take care when navigating the outside of the building, especially when walking down Little Sanctuary, which is often used by large vehicles.
